a Portuguese bedstead (bed frame) of carved and turned rosewood with 17th century elements, the headboard profusely mounted with spiral-twist spindles and the footboard between two boldly turned posts that include spiral-twists, brass bed bolts with turned detail.
This type of bed takes it inspiration, with its intricate carving, from the Moors and in the 17th century, the turning and carving became even more elaborate as on this example.
Several example of these type of beds carved in a similar vein, are illustrated in the Guide to the Museu-Escola de Artes Decorativesas Portuguesas, Lisbon, 2001, pp. 234-235.
