an impressive large scale pair of salt glazed stoneware garden "strawberry" planters, finely modelled as naturalistic tree stumps, each with some sort of crest including a pike with a small banner including initials, one C.S. and the other E. S. and tassels, circa 1860s, some losses / chips not uncommon with this material, Victorian, England, mid-19th century
Note: these tree stump planters bear a striking resembalance to ones produced by W. Hudspith, South Tyne Woirks, Haltwhistle, Northumberland which were well known in that area and it was seen as a status symbol to have one displayed in your garden.
